[87] ἐπί, the “ὑπό” of the vulg. is a curious instance of a corruption which has invaded all MSS.; they are, however, notoriously careless about prepositions. There can be little doubt which is right, for Satnioeis is a river in 6.34, 14.445. Cf. Schol. T, “ἐπὶ τοῖς ποταμοῖς φαμεν κεῖσθαι τὰς πόλεις” (but with lemma “ὑπό”); Strabo xiii. 605 “γράφουσι δέ τινες οὐκ εὖ “ὑπὸ Σ”.” αἰπ́ηεσσαν, here only; formed from “αἰπός” as “μεσήεις” from “μέσος” (see note on 12.269).
