[208] σίαλος in this connexion is acc. to Curt. (Et. p. 717) and Brugmann (Gr. i. p. 421) a diminutive of “σῦς”, for “σϝ - ίαλο - ς”. The later meaning fat (Hippokr.) seems therefore to rest on a misunderstanding. The words are joined as in “ἴρηξ κίρκος”, etc. τεθαλυῖαν ἀλ., ‘rich with fat, lard.’ Cf. “θαλέθοντες ἀλοιφῆι” 467, and the use of “θαλεῖα”, rich.
