[598] ἐμβάληι, so all MSS.; Hermann “ἐμβάλοι”. The use of the subj. is very doubtful, but perhaps defensible; see note on 19.354. The following opt. makes it additionally harsh here. ἐξαίσιον, going beyond measure (1.418), i.e. unreasonable. The poet thus speaks explicitly as a Greek partisan. Cf. Od. 4.690, Od. 17.577.
