[868] ἀκριτόφυλλον, i.e. with foliage massed together, so that the eye could not distinguish separate trees; see note on 246. According to the scholia the small cones of the pine were called “φθεῖρες” from some fancied resemblance to those insects; but the best ancient authority is for the reading “φθιρῶν” or “φθίρων”.
