[403] ἔμβητον, a word which recalls our familiar ‘go in and win,’ though the latter is no doubt pugilistic, ‘close with your man.’ The origin of the expression here is not so clear; the meaning evidently is spurt. This, for one who is behind his competitors, is expressed by “ἐμβῆναι”, as by “ἐξάλλεσθαι” (399) for one who is level with (among) them. Cf. “ἔμβα” = hasten, Eur. El. 113, Ar. Ran. 377, Eccl. 478.
