[443] 443-64 were rejected as an interpolation by Zen., Aph.and Ar., on the ground that the same question arises in the beginning of M with no allusion to this passage. In fact we have here another case of two parallel and independent versions of the same theme brought into the narrative. One is as ‘genuine’ as the other; both are late. It must, however, be noted that out of the twenty-two lines the following appear more or less in other places: 443 = 4.1, 445-6 (first halves) = 5.420-1, 449-50 = 12.5-6, 454 = 1.517, 455 = 8.201, Od. 13.140, 460 = 2.140, 462 =12.31, 464 = 5.274, etc.; or nearly half.
