[760] περί τ᾽ ἀμφί τε, around the circuit, and on both sides, of the trench. The distinction, however, cannot be pushed too far, as it may be regarded merely as an instance of the compound prepositions which are not uncommon in H., e.g. “ἀμφὶ περί21.10. See H. G. § 227. The couplet seems out of place here, as the fight never crosses the trench, and indeed does not approach it before 18.150. It is perhaps only a tag to round off the end of a rhapsody in recitation.
