[390] κωφόν has the primitive sense blunt, from “κόπτω”, ob-tusus, lit. ‘beaten back.’ Cf. Soph. O. T. 290κωφὰ καὶ παλαί᾽ ἔπη”, Soph. Aj. 911 πάντα κωφός”.
