[480] αὐταί the same, without the article as 12.225 (q.v.), Od. 8.107, Od. 10.263, Od. 16.138, Od. 21.366; see also 5.396. The rarity of the use no doubt led to the variant “αὖτε”, with illicit hiatus, perhaps through an intermediate “αὖ ταί”, which may have led to the eccentric accents of MSS. (“αὖται Α, αὖται, αὔται, αὕται” others). See Platt in J. P. xix. 50.
